The Korean War in a Nutshell:
After WWII, Japanese forces had surrendered to both the Soviet Union and the United States, creating a communist North Korea and a democratic South Korea. The nations remained at peace due to the 38th parallel that separated the two nations apart. However on June 25th, 1950 North Korean forces invaded South Korea in order to reunite the mainland under one nation. Supported by the Soviet Union, North Korean forces attempted to attack the South Korean capital Seoul. South Korea then appealed to the United Nations for help, and the US along with forces from the United Nations entered the war on the side of South Korea. North Korea took Seoul and was on the offensive. They pushed the UN forces all the way back to Pusan. Then more help arrived and the UN forces alongside South Korean forces pushed north and reached the 38th Parallel. They continued north and took Pyongyang, the North Korean capital. The UN forces advanced to the Yalu River where they couldn’t advance anymore. They had taken over most of North Korea but the Chinese intervened and they pushed the UN forces back to the 38th Parallel. For two years there was a brutal stalemate at the 38th Parallel until the peace treaty was signed. The war allowed cost America billions of dollars.
